Aim of the Project

The main aim of the project is to combat hate speech, misogyny, racism, and other forms of discrimination, fostering an environment where all young people can actively participate.

PROJECT ACHIEVEMENTS

Inception research

Our foundational research documents are the foundation of “Before They Hate”, providing a detailed analysis of hate speech, misogyny, racism, and xenophobia in online spaces. This inception research feature in-depth study from participating countries, offering insights into the intersection of these issues and their real-life implications for young people. This research serves as a vital guide in shaping the project’s direction and strategies.

Photo Campaign

Our Photo Campaign weaves together a collection of stories and images from Iceland, Spain, Greece, Scotland, and Denmark, capturing the essence of young people who challenge societal ‘norms’. It focuses on individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those differing in race, faith, gender identity, and abilities, who have faced and overcome violence and hate speech. This campaign celebrates their resilience and diversity, showcasing personal narratives and photographs that vividly depict their journey of overcoming adversity and embracing their unique identities.

Filming

Our filming achievement, highlighted by the short film ‘Geltu’, took place in Iceland in the summer of 2023 as a part of the ‘Before They Hate’ project. ‘Geltu’ narrates the story of Blær, a vibrant and eccentric teenage girl, who faces hate and adversity after coming out as trans. The film is a collaborative effort, featuring young participants from all five partner countries. These youths were also involved in a preparatory training where they learned extensively about hate speech, its various forms, and effective ways to counteract it.
