Counter hate speech through memes

Ask your participants to imagine they are going to act on a specific incident of online hate speech. For this, they are going to create a positive meme that counters the offensive online action.

Let’s start!

Share this activity with your participants and ask them to create their memes. They can either use an image they already have and edit it by clicking on the Upload image button, or use one of the proposed templates by clicking on Select meme template

They can choose to counter some of the examples shared in the other activities of the platform or pick some themselves.

Encourage them to use their imagination to counter hate speech through memes!

Did you know...?

As a youth worker, you have an important role in helping them realise that their rights should be respected online the same as everywhere else. That’s why it’s important to teach young people how to spot hate speech when they see it online and give them tools and knowledge to shut it down.
In general violence prevention, research from the US has shown that instead of trying to change people’s minds, it’s more likely to focus on improving their social and emotional skills. Youth who have better emotional control and problem-solving skills are better prepared to deal with stressful scenarios. Regarding online hate speech, other researchers have made similar points. Being able to work on and improve the skills listed above can help people stop participating in hate speech.

Tips for the facilitator

As the topic of hate speech in general may elevate arousal and spur disagreement, it is important to set a scene of seriousness and empathy.
