Hate Speech Bingo

Let’s play bingo!

Share the Hate Speech Bingo with your participants. Let them know that this bingo is special as the idea is to identify and understand hate speech in their environment. It can be at school, on TV, during online discussions, or social media interactions, for example.

Ask participants to read the statements in each box. By clicking each box they can learn more about the situation presented and by clicking again they can mark if they have ever faced that situation. If they want to uncheck a box, they just need to click on it again.

Did you know...?

A person’s understanding and emotions can be shaped by hate speech, which in turn can spread feelings of fear, distrust, or hatred towards specific groups. As intolerance gains acceptance, it has the power to influence public opinion and behaviour. This can be seen as particularly true among the younger generation, as they are still developing their sense of identity and learning to communicate. For instance, some participants in research on how young people perceive shouts of violence against women during football games found the violent language acceptable because it was frequent in that setting.

Tips for the facilitator

Before starting the game, you can briefly discuss the impact of hate speech on individuals and communities.

After the game rounds, gather participants to discuss their experiences. Facilitate a conversation about the hate speech phrases they encountered and why they are harmful. Encourage participants to share strategies for responding to hate speech online.

Summarise key takeaways from the game and discussion. Emphasize the importance of recognizing and combating hate speech in online spaces. Encourage participants to apply what they’ve learned.
