There has been a lot of focus on the complicated and controversial topic of hate speech recently. This encompasses “all types of expression that incite, promote, spread, or justify violence, hatred, or discrimination against a person or group of persons, or that denigrates them, by reason of their real or attributed personal characteristics or status”. A person’s or group’s racial or ethnic background, religious beliefs, language spoken, gender, and expression of that gender are all examples of such traits.
