According to the Vienna Declaration, 1993, human rights are: universal, indivisible and interdependent and interrelated.

The UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights includes first-generation rights as well as those considered second-generation rights.

First-generation human rights encompass civil and political rights that are traditionally associated with individual freedoms and liberties. They include, among others, the right to life, equality before the law, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, property rights, the right to a fair trial, and the right to vote.

Second-generation rights are the rights of the individual as a member of society; they are economic, social, and cultural rights—rights to be free from the inequalities of poverty, unemployment, and inadequate education and health care.
