In light of history

The following quotes have been said by someone throughout history. Share the activity with your participants and ask them if they can identify when they have been said and by whom.

They should drag each box to the place on the timeline where they think it happened. You can discuss with them about the possibilities.

To check the solution, they should click on the arrow on the right.

Did you know...?

Hate speech is firmly ingrained in human nature and has a lengthy history. Racist and homophobic rhetoric and practises have been around for a long time, and they tend to target already-vulnerable populations. Hate speech has been used by many different cultures to marginalise and oppress others, causing more division and discrimination. Its goals include the dehumanisation of people or groups, the instigation of violence, and the promotion of prejudice based on inborn traits.

Tips for the facilitator

Ask participants to try to explain why they think the statement is from that time to convince each other. The goal of the activity is not to have everyone come to a consensus about the period but rather to have the group think about the way hate speech has manifested through time.

So when you feel that all useful reflection on the topic is finished, move the conversation on to the next statement regardless of whether you have reached a decision as a group on what year you think the statement is from.

Debriefing

At the end of the activity youth and youth workers should have a conversation on the effect of hate speech and the fact that in these time periods people were not just bad or worse than we are now. They were however heavily influenced by war propaganda or hate speech and how it has been specifically used to influence people and make them afraid of marginalised groups.
